The last page of Vi-Dan USA (For the People)

Against my better judgement today I am post the last page of my book about my life that's taken 10 years to write. I do everything myself so the the book is real.

Today we our at a point the people in our country seem perplexed about the meaning of our nation, our precious democracy, the things it stands for. Yes, our path was hard and imperfect as is all history, we have however lead the world forward with our democracy, our rule of law, our tolerance, our strives for representation and rights, this is the America I have always known, fought for, paid taxes too, believe in, and been dedicated to all my life..

Their is not room for hate groups, right down garbage for thoughts and thinking that's alien to everything we our and strive for as a people. I found these the thoughts I will end my book with, hoping that others might just simply think deeper and look at things more important then just their wants, personal desire, their personal feelings. That they our a member of something greater as an American and as a human-being.

What If ?

WHAT IF, the people of our world understood they were star dust, that they had this one singular life to live. That their brothers & sisters were every living human being on earth.

WHAT IF, people understood they were not evil, just human with the responsibility and ability to choose how they live and think. That all higher thoughts from our Gods and Philosophies are based on human - beings ability to love, find higher thoughts with-in us. After all the men that begot each religious thought were simply humanists, attempting to create a better world based on the knowledge of their day.

WHAT IF, the well being of others had the same value as our own, if we understood the joy and power of giving, sharing, kindness and love. Yes, that some human instincts, thou real, simply don’t give the reward of peace, contentment and happiness. That to evolve as humans we have always had to control pride, greed, hate and revenge.

WHAT IF, people know this power was in all of us, found in silence, maybe at times to not think at all but to listen. That man has always reach for a higher level of human consciousness, love, rights and tolerance. That to evolve as humans we have always had to struggle to control the human instincts of self, greed, hate, revenge and I’m better.

These are not new concepts or thoughts, but what humans have always did to reach this better point we our at today on this blue planet. Yes, so much yet to do with new and different challenges. As always we strive to promote the good side of our human nature witch is as much a part of our being as all the other human instincts.Life seems to me to be oh so simple, that a grateful heart is the beginning of wisdom.

My Momorual day Post

I wrote this poem 26 years ago after gulf war one l, I was in Saudi Arabia working, shared with the young men and women of our arm service often, the whole experance was when I first starter to openly deal with my own war. This poem will be in my book after 9 years of effort publish in a few months, copy written but quit personal, this will be the year I share many personal things so today seem's right to share this.

Dear Rocky:

I should not be writing a letter to you because you’re dead. Killed in Vietnam, fighting for what you believed in. Last summer I met an old friend and read a letter you had written her. You dirty dog, she was supposed to be my girl and you were putting on the moves. God Rocky, you sounded so lonely, so tired. I don’t blame you for thinking about Nancy, she is wonderful.

Well, old friend, like you I was up in the I-Corps area, doing my Marine thing. I should have joined you in quiet peace but for some reason, call it fate, God’s will, whatever, you’re gone and I’m here alive. I often think about you. My mom sent me news clipping of your mother placing a rose at the Veteran’s Memorial. Your name’s on that memorial, and there’s also one in Washington with your name on it. No one forgot you Rocky, and they never will.

Life has been hard for your family. But you don’t want to hear about that. God blessed my family and I often wonder why it’s like that. I have tried to be faithful to the ideals we shared as kids. Since you have been gone, it’s like I could never be just another guy from Fort Collins, and for some reason my life has taken me all over this world.

I went back to Vietnam when my wounds healed up. I took care of some kids. Like you, I was a gook lover, as the tough guys called us. I ended up married to a Vietnamese lady, a wonderful person, adopted three kids and had one with Thu. Now they’re all grown up, regular American kids.

We lost that war, Rocky ! Can you believe that ? I was back in Communist Vietnam a year and a half ago. My wife had an uncle who was a high ranking Viet Cong. I met this old man and we hugged and kissed. I got drunk with a former V.C. commander that is a cousin of my wife and we drank and hugged and cried. I befriended a Russian engineer in the hotel and we toasted to friendship, to the future. But all that’s nothing, Rocky. Today there is no USSR, no Berlin Wall, and no Iron Curtain and somehow we won the big one.

Do you remember when we were kids how we were going to run away and go dig tunnels under the Berlin Wall. Now there’s a movement for democracy sweeping across the world and every thing's changed. Everything but people.

I forgot to tell you I was in Vietnam when the end came, I had to run. Then later I was in Iran when it went Islamic fundamentalist, and I had to run. Rode a drilling rig up the mine-infested waters of the Gulf during the Iran –Iraq War. Sat in the sands of Saudi Arabia as missiles came in and were shot down by an anti-missile system called the Patriot. Rocky, there are names, movements, place we never talked about. Weapons you can’t believe and instant TV coverage of everything in the world live in our homes.

They say we kicked butt in the Gulf last year. After so many wars they all look the same to me. But people change slower than technology, movements take time. There are many wars going on. Maybe you would be disappointed in me, I don’t even own a gun, never have since Vietnam.

Time goes on and the world and our lives change and there are wonderful new things that make life so easy. The world’s so small, it’s the information age. The micro revolution. I’ve worked and traveled the world and found all people have some basic aspirations and aspects to life that are common everywhere.

Remember when we used to know we were so right and some other things were so wrong. I call it the black and white attitude. But my old friend, I’ve found so much grey in this world, in this life. I never lost my direction or understanding of who I am, but I also never declare myself as having the only correct way, there is just too mush to learn.

Today we as a people are starting to understand that all our greed and wealth is destroying event our planet, our environment. We couldn’t begin to see that as kids but the warning signs have been showing themselves for years now. In some ways life’s not all so simple anymore. It’s still beautiful and challenging but as always people have to stand for something; the thing is, the enemy isn’t just the Commies, often it’s us.

I am glad I was your best friend for those few short years. It gives me extra drive to live and to do not only what I want to do, but to try to accomplish something, or at least to try to leave this world a better place. You left this world fighting for what you believed in. Your spirit of courage is for me a comfort and a call to push on for the good fight though the battle is all different now.

I am sorry I could not be of much comfort to your family. It was all so overwhelming. Only today do I dare to write a letter to you. They say as Vietnam Vets we’ve got all kinds of psychological problems with funny-sounding names. I sometimes laugh about that. I do know that people that felt the heat, smelled the smoke, saw the pain of battle, those people are a little different. As in everything else there are some phonies, but that’s to be expected. We’ve had our share of phony politicians and preachers. Maybe the simple point is that we learned a little earlier than some what was important in life.

Well, old friend, if you somehow get this letter, then you will know you not only did not die in vain, you have never been forgotten. If I ever do accomplish anything grand in this world, believe me, your spirit will deserve much of the credit—though I mostly do my thing in little ways with little people all over this world.

One last thing, Rocky, don’t get the wrong ideaI, I understand the price you paid with your life and all I can do is love life with all my strength. Appreciate all the things you never got to have. I’ll feel truly and deeply all the joys and sorrows, I’ll sing life’s songs extra loud for you, cry the extra tear over the sadness and go the extra mile to be true to the ideals we shared, and most of all, my friend, I’ll always remember you.

A Personal Post !

In this post I share that my 9 year of effort to write the story of my life is being published 1st quarter of 2017, this particular post is concerning a book published in 2016, about one of the more famous battles of the Vietnam war 50 years ago, written by a professional author of 13 books, his last book is about this battle, it also was my final battle after 8 months of combat. The author like myself was in that battle as a gunship pilot, shot through the foot while fly at ground level in one of the attempts to support us. (No Greater Love) best summed up in the actions of my friend Doug Van who saved my life but is about many others also.

His book can be purchased on Amazon in print. No Greater Love (The Groucho Marx Battle) by Marion F Sturkey in the search. This is a book of pure military history written first hand, published by a publishing company.

My book tells of this battle also, it covers only 25 pages of a 300 + page book, my book is raw, unfiltered history, of personal experiences, emotions and fact that get left out of most books. An example in this battle described here-in, I remember facts a little different, the fact it took about 7 to 10 minutes for Doug Van to come into the enemy lines to flip me over, then drag me back to his hole, a long enough period of time for me to apply my own web belt as a tourniquet to steam the bleeding from my leg, this also save my life, my only medical attention done by myself, the fact I was shot at point blank and not bayoneted, that the only attention I had was from Doug, not to my wounds as he was in one of the lowest holes in our small circle so was in constant battle, on constant alert, giving me swamp water taken off a dead enemy kill at his hole, tossing the dead soldiers water canteen to me at some point over the next 16 hrs. Today regardless that we live in a world of tweets, facts our everything, like the amount of water a young marines need to fight 16 hrs in a tropical setting, or when bleeding to death, you basically thirst to death.

My book has been written only by myself, edited by myself with only spell check by a friend, published by my own publishing company. Given that I lived out my life all around the world, often on the front line of our international affairs for 40 years, it will review a few things people have no clue about, or understand. Things still in the headlines today from my experiences of living in the Middle East for 22 years, not secret, all in the public domain but thing never told for reasons I reject.

Part of why I do everything is because Publishing companies, publish books to make money, most books our written to make money. Nine years ago my thinking a little like that also, I’ve had offers’ to publish. In writing this I also changed, it focus my reason's. I’m an author, not a writer, attempting to review real history or tell the truths from facts and personal experience because I believe it will help us as human beings and some personally. It will tell the hard facts of many subjects, but it will also tell about the far more numerous good and wonderful things that I found in this life like those in family, friendships, love, devotion to many things that people carry. It will show how I recover both physical and emotional, the physical side took a year in the hospital, only late in life has effects, the emotional side is best described as excepting reality, forgetting about self and concentrate on others and things more important then self.

Most important, please keep in mind this particular event described, all-tho challenging, it's not a negative thing that haunts me but simply the life I lived, experiences in life that were mind, in fact I made it into something positive my whole life. (I’m convinced good and bad things happen to everyone, excepting them and not allowing them to control your life is the only way to be really free) I call this event today the birthing of my second life, much of the book is about what that means in real life. Like many survivor’s I carry a sense of Reality, Thankfulness, Awareness

and a Sensitivity to and in almost everything, that can and did created a remarkable life, this I hope can be seen though-out my book, I attempt to show this in how I sign every e-mail.

Some facts, I maybe one of few seriously wounded Marine that after a year in the hospital, another years searching, I returned to Vietnam in January 1969, without a job, no connections and $40. in my pocket the night I arrived in Saigon, living their until the final days of South Vietnam, working in the final evacuation. I may be the longest living retired US Marine, retiring in 1967 at $53. per month, refusing to be discharged also another story of luck. Let me just say ! My life has been to me about the most remarkable, wonderful life a man ever got to live filled with challenges, a few struggle, a lot of adventures and so much joy and Love with meaning. I guess on one level a person has to be a little bite argent to think that, personally I feel it would be a shame to leave this world and not explain what I got to learn having livid it.

I share my web-site www.vidanusa.com , created by myself, in need of up dating witch due to technology I can’t do just now, one of my on going projects witch I will need help on. It has 6 pages, 700 personal photos witch shows in pic’s my life as it unfolded. Yes this book is being done different. Part of the book is about this modern age, technology advancements, how I was forced to learn about them. Me who forgot to finish high-school, my education mostly self study and training myself, today it’s remarkable I’m able to share my life with people world-wide, this was impossible event when I started the book. The world has changes, we must also, I feel this can advance our understanding and knowledge of each other everywhere.
The Book's name is V-Dan USA, a Vietnamese word that means (For the People) also the name of a hospital I worked to supply all imported material to build it, built by the last First Lady of Vietnam, Madam Huyen Van Thieu and her organization (The Vietnam Women Association in Service to Society). Yes, I will tell about the quit hero Doug Van and personal friend yet today who risked his life to save mind. You may be surprised about just what this relationship is, it’s interesting also, naturally Doug is a quit American hero, his and my memory of facts remarkably alike. My book will not be for those with closed minds, set idea’s, shy of realities, to be honest something important to me so you simply tell all, good and bad. Thankfully I fave few regreets if any, except that I was quit human. In the bible it’s written (The truth will set you free), how free is also part of the story.

Deeper Thoughts

Friday 6 February 2015

It's the weekend again, todays thought our for the news and conversation you will hear this weekend after another week of violence, insane responds to it. Remember the whole logic behind the very acts witch is a tactic not a battle, with publicizing the act understood to spread fear, to gain a responds. Of course a responds will be needed, by whoom must be debated. How to solve the problems that drive the insanity, its not the first time in history small violent groups have gain power with several followers, wars it's selves is the problem. Long term results with positive outcomes must always be the goal. The concept these radical thugs our push has -0- chance of being embraced by the masses any where, to think anything else means you don't believe in yourself and your concept.
